Galapagos Islands Vacation Row Adventure

Galapagos Islands Vacation offered by ROW Adventures is a perfect alternative to the award winning Galapagos Unbound. It offers travelers shorter options for those looking for a land-based Galapagos Islands vacation in 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 days with a 2 island itinerary. These vacations are flexible and offers daily departures. Perfect for couples, families and groups!

Itinerary:

Day 1:  After your flight from the mainland you will arrive on the island of Baltra to begin your adventure, you start out with a short 10 minute ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island, where you will arrive at approximately 11:30 AM, although times may vary by flight schedule. From here, our private coach will transfer you to the Red Mangrove Aventura Lodge where you will check-in, and have lunch.

Afternoon- The adventure will start with a trip to "Los Gemelos" (The Twins), two enormous collapsed lava chambers-a breathtaking visual reminder of the power of nature.  The short, easy hike to each of the twins is swarming with endemic flora and fauna, including the remaining Scalesia Forest, draped in liverwort, with large and small tree finches, the beautiful vermillion flycatcher, and more. It's a wonderful introduction to the majestic power of the forces of nature and the great biodiversity of the Santa Cruz Highlands. We will visit a 600-acre private reserve where the giant Galapagos tortoises freely roam, graze, and sleep. Sometimes it's a bit muddy here, so before setting out, we provide a selection of field boots to choose from, including large sizes for men. You will be transported through this tropical environment by truck, and from there you walk through fields to blend with these gentle giants. As prehistoric as these creatures look, wait until you hear what they sound like! After visiting the tortoises, we'll take a 5-minute ride to the entrance of a 450-meter (1350 feet) illuminated lava tunnel. With a ceiling nearly 20 feet high in most places, this is an incredible opportunity to wander through the remnants of one of the most powerful forces in nature-lava flows. Stalagmites, stalactites, sulfur, mineral-colored walls, and the rippled floor formed from lava can all be experienced in this uniquely Galapagos stroll.

Briefing and dinner at Aventura lodge dinner.

Day 2:  Morning- Breakfast at the Lodge.

After breakfast and with a good tide you leave on a kayak adventure! Traveling from the Hotel dock or municipal pier we will take a water taxi to the German beach to begin our kayak adventure then take the kayaks around the mangroves, home of pelicans, frigates, and blue footed boobies, then reach Franklin Bay, where we will stop to observe sea turtles, mantarays, etc. Next we enter the fascinating Love Tunnel, two natural cliffs made of volcanic rocks, where we can spot endemic plants and nesting birds. After kayaking you will have time to go snorkeling, with the opportunity to see sea lions, green sea turtles and countless schools of tropical fish!

Lunch at Aventura

Afternoon- We will embark on a short boat ride to our next destination; Isabela Island. There will be plenty of opportunities to see marine life such as whales, dolphins, whale sharks, and manta rays just to name a few of the possibilities. Upon arrival and check-in to our lodge on Isabela Island, you will enjoy a welcome cocktail on our beach front deck. As you take in the scenery, our naturalist guides will share with you the features of the local culture as well as the history of the islands.

Day 3:   Morning-After breakfast we drive up into Isabela's highlands, arriving at the base of Sierra Negra Volcano, the island's oldest volcano. Our hike will take us roughly 1250 feet (400 meters) up to the crater rim, where we will see the remarkable expanse of the four-mile wide volcanic crater, second in the world only to Ngorongoro Volcano in Tanzania. Sierra Negra's most recent activity occurred in 2005, starting on October 22nd and continuing for a full week, the northeastern area of the crater erupted. Lava engulfed the vegetated crater floor, raising the bottom as much as two meters in certain areas, leaving the startling blackened and smoldering surface we see today. We take a casual walk  of approximately 3 miles around the rim, pausing to enjoy a snack in the shade below a "Jabancillo" tree.  Afterward, if we are interested in more adventure, we can take a challenging one hour hike across slanted lava fields to Volcan Chico, for more stunning views and a chance to see fumarole activity.

Afternoon-Back at the truck, our next destination is downhill towards the coast, to Campo Duro. This is a lovely organic farm where we eat a healthy and tasty meal prepared by the owners with the farm produce on a lava rock grill. Your guide will discuss the unique partnership this farm shares with the Galapagos National Park in protecting the giant tortoises. Then there is time to wander about the premise or relax in a hammock beneath a beautiful mango tree before heading back to the lodge. We return to our beachfront lodge at which point you may explore Isabela on your own; snorkeling, wandering the town, or relaxing on the beach. Dinner will again be served at the lodge.

Dinner, briefing overnight at the lodge.

Day 4:  Morning- Breakfast at the lodge.  After breakfast we will depart for the "Las Tintoreras" and bay tour.  From the main dock, we will take a short boat ride to Las Tintoreras islet. We will tour the bay en route, checking out the blue-footed boobies and Galapagos penguins basking in the sun on the rocky shore. Arriving at Las Tintoreras, we walk and explore this unique and rugged lava field, contrasted by the turquoise sea and deep green of the mangrove forest. Hundreds of marine iguanas and sea lions lounge about and a shallow water channel provides excellent viewing of napping white-tipped reef sharks. With the impressive volcanoes of Isabela visible in the distance, this extraordinary setting will remain in your memory for years to come. Before returning to the lodge we have the option to spend some time snorkeling in hopes of seeing these calm white-tipped reef sharks, sea lions and sea turtles and exploring the mangroves from below.

Back at the lodge for lunch.

Afternoon- Depart to Santa Cruz. Our boat ride will take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the sea conditions.

Arrival and check in at Aventura Lodge. After you have checked in, head to the Charles Darwin Research Station.  Here, you will learn about one of the most successful reptile breeding programs in the world. The Charles Darwin Research Station was founded in 1964 and is supported by over 100 scientists and researchers from around the world. The warm, protected waters are popular hangouts spots for giant manta rays, sea turtles, sea lions and an abundance of other Galapagos wildlife. Our snorkel masks and flippers provide us the ideal way to explore the ocean world and swim alongside a variety of fish, rays, sea turtles and potentially the curious Galapagos penguins! The playful sea lions nibble our flippers and hope for a game of tug-o-war. This is the only location where you will have the opportunity to snorkel with sea lions and penguins at the same time!

(Note: Sea conditions can affect timing and scheduling of this activity.) Lunch will be served at the lodge. Return to the lodge for lunch

Afternoon-After lunch and around 3:00 PM, we will depart for a ride through the town and search for flamingo feeding spots. After this tour, we will go to the Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Station. Here you learn about and get to see every stage of life for the giant tortoise. From the new born soft-shelled infants to the centenary majestic creatures they become, the giant tortoise is a fascinating creature. The breeding station has recently released young giant tortoises, which we may cross paths with. After our visit to the breeding station, we will take a beautiful, 45-minute hike along the boardwalk and enjoy the Isabela wetlands. Here there are many opportunities to see flamingos and other stunning seabirds. Before we return to the lodge, we will visit the well know Playa del Amor (Love Beach) and enjoy a little enchantment, as you relax on the soft organic sand surrounded by mangrove trees.
